Wild Bird Feeding

Home > Wild Bird Feeding

In addition to our passion for orchids, we have found wild bird observation and photography to be a relaxing and rewarding pastime, and by having a number of bird feeders set up in our back yard, the entertainment comes to us!

In a way, it's sort-of like having a wide array of pets, but in an extremely low-maintenance way, as all you really have to do is feed them.

In the short time that we have been feeding them - not quite two years as I compose this - we have seen at least the following at or under our feeding station:

• Cardinals
• Blue Jays
• Red-Bellied Woodpeckers
• Carolina Wrens
• Hairy Woodpeckers
• Downy Woodpeckers
• Purple Finches
• Catbirds
• Turkeys
• Sparrows (a variety)
• Mourning Doves
• Chickadees
• Eastern Goldfinches
• Titmice
• Mockingbirds
• Nuthatches
• House Finches
• Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds
• Juncos

We also routinely see Robins, Thrushes, and Redtail Hawks, Coopers Hawks, as well as a family of Great Horned Owls that live in our neighborhood, but they are carnivores not attracted to the food we put out, or the birds themselves, as potential prey.  Oh yeah...there is the ubiquitous Canada Geese as well, and occasionally Snow Geese on migration.

It's really interesting how they each have their own personalities - seeing a flock of finches around a feeder is like watching an old "Keystone Kops" movie, there is a definite hierarchy among the three woodpeckers, and chickadees are so bold they "yell" at you if you interrupt their feeding while you refill the feeders!

During this time, we have experimented with types of feeders and different foods to see what works best to attract more birds, while keeping life simple and easy on us.  That has led to us selling the few, proven feeders and foodstuffs we offer in our store.  Read more by clicking a link below:
